How does the course work?

Should you choose to enrol in the Distance Learning course (which you may complete from any country in the world), you will receive your course material, which is comprised of eight workbooks and three text books. The workbooks guide you through the text books and at the end of each workbook, you are required to submit an assignment. Upon enrolling, you are assigned a tutor, whom you may contact (by fax, phone, or e-mail) if you require any advice or assistance. You may start the distance learning course at any time (in other words, there is no specific beginning to the academic year) and there are no due dates for your assignments - you submit them as and when you complete them. Once you have completed an assignment, it must be sent (via post, or e-mail) to your tutor, who will mark it and notify you of your grade and any comments she may have. Once you have completed all eight assignments, you will receive a diploma, which reflects an average of all the grades you have achieved. In other words, your abilities are assessed by continuous evaluation - once you have completed all of the assignments to the satisfaction of your tutor, your diploma will be issued. There is no final examination.

The aims of the course

The course aims to train people, in the comfort of their own homes, with pleasure and without pressure, at their own pace, the skills of teaching young children in the Montessori method for the 2000s.

We hope that when this course is completed students will be qualified to teach in the true Modern Montessori way. They will learn to apply Dr. Montessori's ideas, helping children to understand their unique place in the general plan of nature and to enjoy and learn from the universe.

We believe that this is by far the most up-to-date and most comprehensive distance learning course in Montessori teaching methods available anywhere in the world. We feel that from it students will learn much about themselves, they will gain spiritually and, as a consequence, many young children will benefit for many years to come.

Who will benefit from this course?

Parents
This course gives great understanding of how real education is achieved naturally. You will, therefore, help your children to realise their potential and do exceptionally well. Also, you will learn how to assist teachers to become partners in your children's education.

Those seeking a career
This course is highly recommended for young people interested in helping small children. It is also of great value for future parenthood. Our students work for a teaching diploma examination, and, at the same time, they are helped to attain a higher standard of education themselves with the help of written and practical work.

Teachers
This course is recommended to all experienced teachers of young children who wish to gain insight into the best way to individualise their teaching curriculum, so that children of mixed abilities may work at their own pace.

People wishing to help handicapped children
Section 2 of the course covers in detail the needs of the handicapped child. The entire course will benefit immensely anyone wishing to teach handicapped children and will enable such children to be integrated into the classrooms in preparation for life in the community.

Students wishing to start their own Montessori Class/School
As well as giving all the benefits described above, the course includes a lesson on setting up a Montessori classroom or a Montessori School. Our team will give advice to any students who have successfully completed the course and who wish to start their own pre-school. We can advise on the location of premises/teachers/equipment, enrolling new pupils, etc.

The Course and Diploma

Diploma

The course is divided into eight sections, each of which is detailed below under 'CONTENTS OF THE COURSE'. Each section contains a question paper which students complete and return when they are confident that they have fully understood the content. The student is allocated a tutor who assists throughout the entire course and is available for contact at any time during the course. Each completed question paper, which may be e-mailed, faxed or mailed, is marked and returned with the tutor's assessment. Marks are allocated and kept on record to determine the grade of the diploma, which is issued after the eighth section has been completed and marked. There is therefore no final examination.

The course may be started AT ANY TIME. Students are allowed three years in which to complete the course. However, on average, students complete the course in one year by putting in 1 - 1 and a half hours study per day.

Studying

The course may be started AT ANY TIME, and an hour's study each day should be sufficient to give a clear understanding of the contents. Students have three years in which to complete the course and there are no due dates or deadlines for submission of the assignments.

This simple system, which allows you to study whenever you like at your own pace, is followed throughout the entire course.

There are no extra examinations. This means that, provided you have displayed reasonable understanding and effort within your responses to each of the eight question papers, you are awarded the Diploma in Modern Montessori Teaching.
