ENROLMENT: Prospective students must be at least eighteen years of age and have successfully completed a High School education. Prospective students not meeting these qualifications but who would like to train as a Montessori Director/Directress will be interviewed to determine possible exemption.
THIS COURSE HAS BEEN AWARDED FULL ACCREDITATION BY THE MONTESSORI ACCREDITATION COUNCIL FOR TEACHER EDUCATION. MACTE IS AN INTERNATIONAL, NON-PROFIT MAKING ORGANISATION FOR THE ACCREDITATION OF COURSES IN MONTESSORI TEACHER TRAINING.

COURSE CONTENT :
- A perspective of the history of Education, where Montessori fits into the spectrum of other teaching approaches, philosophies and principles in today's educational world.
- Understanding of the developmental stages of children from early childhood to six years of age, with special reference to the four planes of development: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Spiritual.
- An in-depth study of Montessori Philosophy and Principles with tutorial discussion groups.
- A documented study on the Montessori Observation technique and its application in the Montessori Classroom, together with assessment criteria for learning patterns and work cycles in relation to the development of children.
- The Montessori environment.
- A thorough study of the Montessori didactic materiais for children aged two and a half to six years.
- Private and supervised practice with the Montessori materials.
- Practical teaching experience in Montessori classrooms (minimum 200 hours).
- Setting up a school, with special reference to classroom preparation and management.
- The Montessori Directress (teacher). Spiritual preparation of the Directress.
- Material making - to produce a representative sample of the basic handmade materials in the Montessori classroom.
- Knowledge of parent outreach programmes, information evenings, handouts for parents, counselling approaches.
VENUES:

The course will be conducted at The College of Modern Montessori, Linbro Park (ten minutes from Sandton City).
The course will be conducted from the University of Natal, Durban Campus, Glenwood and The Montessori Children's House, Kloof.
The course will be conducted in Cape Town - venue to be announced shortly.
DURATION:
One year - two lectures per week 5.30pm to 8.30pm during the four school terms (219 hours lecturing time).
EXAMINATIONS:
The examinations will be conducted at the venues where training occurs.
The final written examination will take place at the Johannesburg College of Education, Parktown. The final practical examination will take place at The College of Modern Montessori, Linbro Park.
Another final written examination will take place at Natal University, Durban Campus, Glenwood. The final practical examination will take place at The Montessori Children's House, Kloof.
A final written exam will be conducted in Cape Town - venue to be announced shortly.
